Conservative MP Nadine Dorries has ditched her parliamentary duties to appear in reality TV show I’m a celebrity get me out of here. Dorries, who is paid over £65000 a year for her services as MP for Mid-Bedfordshire will spend up to a month in Australia to appear on the show and will be paid up to £40,000.

It is believed that Dorries did not request permission of Tory Chief Whip Sir George Young to leave her job for a month and is expected to face tough scrutiny when she returns. The Conservative party are yet to officially comment.

Dorries, 55, is the first MP to appear on a reality TV show where the public have the power to vote out participants since Respect MP George Galloway appeared on Celebrity Big Brother Six years ago.
