The best boxing scene, from the best boxing film – ever

by Heather C Thomson

Robinson v La Motta

Regarded by many experts as one of the best feature films ever made, Raging Bull is the 1980 Academy Award winning film starring Robert de Niro as former world middleweight boxing champion Jake La Motta – directed by Martin Scorsese.

This scene shows Sugar Ray Robinson taking on La Motta for the title.

WARNING – the following clip is pretty grewsome, even for boxing fans.  But boxers say this really is how it feels.

  1. Jake La Motta was a bit of a thug in real life was he not?

    • Very true. Although Jake La Motta was involved with the production the film doesn’t hold back on his violence. He was physically and mentaly abusive to all around him, particularly his wife and brother. Can you seperate violence in boxing from violence is private life – Scorsese at least attempts to examine the whole man.

  2. Been meaning to watch this for yeeears and now you have reminded me, evening viewing sorted. Thank you!
