1943 – A mass uprising against Nazi troops in Janowska Concentration Camp, in which only a few Jews escaped, led to 6000 being murdered.

1969 – Apollo 12 astronauts Pete Conrad and Alan Bean become the third and fourth people to walk on the moon.

1977 – A Portuguese Boeing 707 crashes in the Madeira Islands killing 130.

1984 – A series of explosions at a petrol storage plant in Mexico result in a mass fire, with 500 people killed.

1994 – The National Lottery begins in Great Britain.
