1477 – William Caxton prints the first book on a printing press in England.

1493 – Christopher Columbus first sees Puerto Rico.

1793 – The Louvre is opened in France.

1916 – The First Battle of the Sommes ends with the Allied Forces gaining 6 miles on the enemy.

1928 – Steamboat Willie, the first cartoon featuring full sound, airs. It is the work of Walt Disney and is known as the birth of Mickey Mouse (despite the fact Mickey has appeared in two previous cartoons)

1940 – In New York City, the Mad Bomber plants his first bomb. This is to be the first in a series of 33 bombs planted between this date and the 1950s.

1943 – The RAF bomb Berlin, causing small damage to the city but killing 141 people.

1963 – The first push button telephone goes into service.

1987 – A fire in St Pancras underground station, otherwise known as the station attached to King’s Cross, kills 31.

1988 – US President Ronald Reagan allows the death penalty for drug traffickers.
