Council at it again

I don’t know if any of you read about Renfrewshire council paying Olly Murs to switch on their Christmas lights and perform for half an hour but I was shocked!
The council have just made £24 million worth of cuts resulting in 500 workers losing their jobs, and they have just paid X Factor reject Olly Murs a staggering £15,000 to switch on their lights and perform for the crowds for half an hour. It’s a ridiculous amount of money to pay to someone just to switch on the lights and perform for 30 minutes given the recent cuts and the families affected as a result of being made redundant. I can’t help but be appalled at the situation especially at this time. The last thing people want is to lose their jobs just before Christmas time, and then find out later that an apparent celebrity is being paid for doing almost nothing!
The article claims that opposition councillors were furious but yet, as always nothing will happen to fix this shocking decision. Along side Olly Murs, the council have also hired The Singing Kettle and The Red Hot Chilli Pipers, both of whom are also receiving a £2000 payout for their entertainment.
Many of the councils are spending thousands of pounds getting someone ‘worthy’ to switch on the lights but what is the point?
The krankies are switching on Glasgow’s lights for free, so why the massive payout? As if anyone actually cares about who does it.

  1. I don’t know what it is like – but if there is a big event made of it with food, booze and festivities it may be worth getting a celeb to attract more people. And if there is a bucket collection or something, it may work out in one way or another.

  2. I don’t think its worth 500 workers losing their jobs and huge cuts to public services to get a celeb along for an hour…

Doesn’t surprise me from an SNP council!

  3. Shocking! Is it a free event or do peope attending pay a ticket price that may go some way to justifying paying out £15,000? x

  4. This was definitely going to cause controversy, but look here – he’s giving all the money to charity!
He does ask to “Please don’t let me go”, maybe we shouldn’t… 😛

  5. lisa im unsure if they have to pay for the tickets or not, i only read that he was being paid but it mentioned nothing about purchasing tickets for it.
lmao george, i read somewhere today that he was giving it all away and then i read that he was only giving £5000 away, hopefully its all of it tho!
