1847 – Off the coast of Ireland, a ship is wrecked on some rocks, killing 92 of the 100 on board.

1951 – A direct dial telephone service starts in America.

1969 – National Educational Television begins broadcasting, the predecessor to the Public Broadcasting Service debuts in the US with its first programme being ‘Sesame Street’.

1989 – Fall of the communist regime in Bulgaria.

2010 – Thousands of students travel to London to protest against a proposed rise in the cap of tuition fees.

Robert Enke – German International Goalkeeper, Rated as favourite to be German first choice in the World Cup, before he committed suicide by jumping in front of a train. This was a tragedy for the football world. (d.2009)
