1333 – The river Arno floods in Florence, Italy, causing mass damage.

1736 – Mozart’s Symphony Number 36 is performed for the first time in Austria. (36!? Would have thought such a talented guy would make up names for his symphonies…)

1918 – Austria-Hungary surrenders to Italy.

1921 – Adolf Hitler forms the Sturmabteilung (a fighting force which assisted with his rise to power, also known as the SA)

1922 – The entrance to Tutankhamun’s tomb is found by Howard Carter and his team of archaeologists. Carter and his team are infected by the curse (supposedly). (The curse is a fascinating myth!! Read about it!)

1966 – The river Arno floods, submerging two thirds of the city of Florence. 113 people are killed and 30000 are left homeless. (This is the second time Florence has flooded on this day!! Not a good day for those living on the banks of the Arno. Though this doesn’t come as a surprise, as the river is notorious for flooding.)

1970 – A 13 year old feral child is found in Los Angeles. Genie had been locked in her house for most of her life, with no contact to the outside world.

2008 – Barrack Obama becomes the first African-American president of the United States.

2008 – Homosexual marriage is banned in California with the introduction of Proposition 8. Only opposite sex marriage is legal.
