October 31st

1864 – Nevada becomes the 36th US state.

1876 – A monster (get it – Halloween…) cyclone hits India killing 200,000 people.

1923 – A hot-as-hell heat wave begins, and is the first of 160 consecutive days of 100 plus degrees in Australia.

1940 – The Battle of Britain ends as the Germans are prevented from invading the UK. (Well done war heroes – you did us proud!)

1941 – Mount Rushmore is completed after 14 years work. (Witch president is witch – for those who haven’t yet caught on, this use of ‘witch’ instead of ‘which’ is deliberate!!!)

1973 – Three Provisional IRA members escape from Mountjoy Prison on a hijacked chopper.

1984 – Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is assassinated by his two security guards. This leads to 10,000 Sikhs being murdered in riots.

1994 – An American Eagle FTR-72 crashes in Indiana killing 68 passengers and crew after flying in icy weather.

1996 – In Sao Paolo, a Fokker F100 crashes into some houses, killing nearly 100 people. (This isn’t the end of the crashes either…)

1999 – EgyptAir Flight 990 crashes off the coast of Massachusetts, with all 217 on board dying. (Plane crashes on Halloween – when witches are meant to be flying…spooky.)

2000 – A plane collides with construction equipment upon take-off, killing 79 passengers and 4 crew members, in Taiwan.

2000 – The fifth plane disaster of the day kills 50 people, as a plane explodes over Angola. (5 plane disasters. Should we stop all flights on Halloween – it isn’t a lucky date!)
