1538 – The first University of the New World opens in the Dominican Republic. It is called Universidad Santo Tomas de Aquino (The University of Saint Thomas Aquinas for those who don’t speak Spanish)

1636 – Harvard University is established under a different name in Massachusetts. (Good day for education in America!)

1707 – An earthquake in Japan, the Hoei earthquake, kills more than 5000 people.

1848 – The first railroad is built in Spain. This revolutionizes travel and communication – it is no longer horseback or walking!

1885 – First porcelain toilet is built. (Holy shit! This is taking the piss!)

1886 – The Statue of Liberty is first dedicated.

1891 – The largest Japanese earthquake in history strikes killing approximately 7273 people, injuring a further 17175. (That brings the death toll of Japanese people to die from earthquakes on this day to over 12273! Not a lucky day for Japan.)

2009 – The Peshawar Bombing kills 117 and injures 213, mainly women and children, with neither the Taliban nor Al-Qaeda taking responsibility for the attack.
