October 17th

1771 – Wolfgang Mozart’ Ascanio in Alba has it’s Premiere in Milan. Mozart is aged 15. (When I was 15 I hadn’t even considered my career, I was being a teenager. If Mozart was here now, what would we think of him? Is he the old Justin Bieber?)

1814 – The London Beer Flood. (I would love to see beer just flowing down the street in place of rain!)

1917 – First British bombing of Germany in WWI.

1933 – Albert Einstein moves the the US after fleeing Nazi Germany. (Had he not, would we have his discoveries? To this date not much is known about good things Nazi Germany did. But they may have produced Einstein’s theory of relativity. And it would not raise the question as to why Einstein spent the last 10 years of his life to try and prove himself wrong.)

1941 – A German ship attacks an American one for the first time in World War II. (The Americans were not a part of WWII until much later on, but this was one of the deciding factors.)

1945 – Evita heads to Plaza de Mayo leading a mass of people to demand the release of Juan Peron. (Watch Evita – a musical by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber – great musical!)

1956 – Sellafield opens – England’s first Nuclear Power Plant. It still remains open today. (There is a joke that if you put your arm in the water near Sellafield you can get a free X-ray. Frank Carson, Irish comedian.)

1979 – Mother Teresa awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Pope John Paul I – Pope (1912), Arthur Miller – Playwright (1915) (Check out A View From A Bridge, a great play written by this man himself!), Evel Knievel – Motorbike daredevil (1938), Eminem – Rapper (1972), Wyclef Jean – Singer turned attempted politician (1972), Kimi Raikonnen – Formula One driver (1979)

1968 – Black American athletes are involved in a silent protest at the Olympics, protesting against poverty and racism.

Number 1s

Roy Orbison – Oh Pretty Woman (1964)

Freda Payne – Band Of Gold (1970)

Adam & The Ants – Prince Charming (1981) (Fantastic song, a must hear. Great song of the 80s – traditional Adam Ant dancing!)

The Shamen – Ebeneezer Goode (1992) (Clubbing tune which made a comeback two years ago – age old!)

B*Witched – Rollercoaster (1998)

Taio Cruz – Break Your Heart (2009)

Then whatever achieves number 1 today!!!
