1582 – Pope Gregory XIII implements the Gregorian calendar. As a consequence, in this year in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Poland, October 4th is followed directly by October 15th.

1783 – The first ever human ascent is performed in a hot air balloon

1793 – Marie Antoinette is tried and found guilty of treason in a pre-determined trial.

1888 – Police receive the ‘From Hell’ letter from Jack The Ripper.

1928 – The airship ‘The Graf Zeppelin’ makes it’s first trans-atlantic flight.

1932 – Tata Airlines, which was later renamed Air India, makes its first flight (It is a day in history for first flights. The hot air balloon, airship and airline!)

1946 – Hermann Goering poisons himself the night before he is tried for war crimes following his capture after World War II.

1953 – The British text a nuclear weapon in Australia.

1987 – The Great Storm of 1987 hits the UK and France, killing 22 people. It has winds as strong as a hurricane, but could not be called a hurricane as it did not originate in the tropics.

1997 – The land speed record is broken as is the sound barrier by Andy Green in Thrust SSC.

2005 – Iraqi Constitutional Referendum.
