Making Politics ‘Hip’

‘Hip’ as in ‘Hip Hop’. How can Obama have Jay-Z and Beyonce performing at his inauguration? And the support of everyone from Kanye West to Eminem who follow his every move and yet the best that British Politics can rustle up is a dodgy You Tube video of MPs dancing and miming to Bucks Fizz (who even are they?). The word that springs to mind for British Politics is ‘stuffy’, how can they hope to engage our generation if they don’t know the first thing about it? The most exciting this about this General Election was the relatively fresh face of Nick Clegg. British Politics seriously need a revival and its up to us to get involved and try to inject some life or a sense of ‘cool’ into the Parliament. This is not to say that we would like to see David Cameron getting low to Dizzee, just that there needs to be a large influx of our generation into today’s politics. Years ago women died for the chance to vote, now some people don’t even bother. The whole world was caught up and engaged in the Presidential race and young people have never been so active. Where’s our Obama?

  1. Bucks Fizz are a band that won Eurovision Song Contest for England in the 1981 competition. They won with Making Your Mind Up – an utterly brilliant song!

  2. I’m with you there Caitlin! However, I must say I would love to see david Cameron getting ‘low’ to some Dizzee!

  3. I wonder who in Britain could make David Cameron cooler? That is a heavy duty task.

Maybe JLS……. maybe not. David Cameron in a low V is not something anyone wants to see.

  4. Alex, its not 1981 anymore though. I agree with Caitlin, British politics is pretty sad compared to America’s.
On the other hand, imagine David Cameron doing backflips with JLS. That would definitely influence my vote…

  5. Totally agree with you, we need an Obama!

  6. I love this post Caitlin. It’s snappy and makes a good point. We do need to be inspired about politics in our country, give us something we can relate to and want to be associated with.
