Koi Japanese Teppanyaki and Sushi Restaurant

Eating fish fingers and chips everyday as part of my student staple diet has only one advantage: It makes you appreciate good food when you finally get to eat it.

Last night, I went to “Koi Japanese Teppanyaki and Sushi Restaurant” (only because my uncle with a wallet full of cash paid a visit). It is Edinburgh’s first and only Teppanyaki  restaurant, located on Potterow, a ten minute walk from the Royal Mile. It involves sitting around a counter top and watching eager eyed as the chef cooks and entertains you. One gets to witness how your four course meal is prepared, while the chef juggles eggs and tosses food into your mouth. It was a feast. Just to make you jealous, I will recount what I had; Miso soup and a side salad to set the juices flowing, followed by a meat platter of sirloin steak, pork loin and Teriyaki  chicken with egg fried rice and stir fried vegetables. For the sole purpose of being polite, I forced myself to finish the night off with pancake ice-cream and green tea. I may have gained a stone in weight and i wont need to eat for a fortnight, however, it was worth it.

After a bottle of white wine, the chef might just insist you assist him with the cooking. He also may insist you dress the part, with a jacket, gloves and a chefs hat. Then, a simple request, flip an egg, and catch it on your spatula. Be warned if you’re not a fan of egg in your hair, I would advise you to politely decline the offer. I didn’t and now thanks to technology, my uncle has a lovely video of my failure on his iPhone.

Do not be deterred, It was an amazing night, one that each of you’s should experience. So classmates, when your family comes visiting, ensure the whip out their wallets and take you to Koi for an unforgettable evening.
